Eta Sigma Gamma, a health education honorary organization at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, with funding from Nebraska Health and Human Services, the Metro Omaha Tobacco Action Coalition, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Metropolitan Omaha Medical Society Alliance, the R. Joe Dennis Foundation, a UNO Teacher-to-Teacher service learning grant, UNO's Drug and Alcohol Program and Three Rivers Internet is working on an anti-tobacco campaign that has sponsored events throughout since 2003. One part of the campaign is an ashtray sculpture designed and constructed by Jamie Burmeister. The ashtrays were donated by UNO students, people in the Omaha area and even from people in outstate Nebraska and Colorado. Mr. Burmeister also created a giant cigarette sculpture that is traveling from school to school. Over 13,000 children have crawled through the cigarette and learned what is in tobacco smoke. Those who signed a pledge not to smoke signed the cigarette sculpture. Educational materials, stickers, bookmarks, and tatoos were supplied to the students and the teachers for follow-up and resource materials.
